15 year old Mary Hannah is excited about the future.

Her 16th birthday is in a month’s time. Turning 16 is a wondrous thing for a girl living in Lancaster County. She will start attending singings in hopes of catch the eye of her future husband. Mary Hannah often finds herself wondering which of the boys will show an interest and want to court her.

Two weeks before her birthday, Mary Hannah is in a horrible accident. By a miracle from the Lord, she survives but her survival comes with a price.

Mary Hannah has become different and everyone is beginning to notice. These differences are creating rumors and tension within her family and the community. As she watches her hopes and dreams disappear, she begins to think that her survival is a punishment.
